On Solar and Lunar Mates

The practical effect of giving each Lunar Exalt a spirit-connected Solar mate is simple. Each Lunar feels an innate and intimate connection to exactly one Solar. Mechanically speaking, once the Lunar first encounters this mate, he automatically gains an Intimacy for the other person, even if he has not yet been formally introduced. This Intimacy follows all other rules for Intimacies except that it can never be permanently lost by any means.

This rule is primarily offered to provide story hooks for Lunar Exalted. The exact nature of the bond between the Lunar and Solar depends on the personalities in question. Two bonded mates who find themselves sexually compatible may or may not become lovers. Other pairs do not feel any mystical compulsion to change their sexual orientations. They just become close friends. Lunars who were mistreated by Solar mates in a past life, who deliberately abandoned their mates during the Usurpation or who have changed gender and/or sexual orientation since their First Age lives might have more... complicated reactions to their reborn mates. Love her or hate her, however, the Lunar still suffers from an Intimacy with his reborn mate.

If the Storyteller does not wish to use this story hook, then just remember that Creation is vast, and a Lunar might go for centuries without having any encounters with someone bearing the Exaltation of her long-dead mate. Finally, only Solar Exalted officially gain the benefit of being mated with a Lunar. The question of whether Abyssal Exalted gain the benefits of having Lunar mate is left to Storyteller discretion.
